He said, I said

He: Most "christians" pretend to believe in some sort of "god." They can't face the reality and finality of death, so they pretend to believe in some nonsense story about a "savior" offering "everlasting life."

I: Christians are Christians despite themselves. We get zapped by the Holy Spirit, it's not our doing. The living, quickening word of God is the wild card in the process though. And a mature curiosity for the mysteries of existence.

Along with regular private prayer asking God for help, and in general making the way open for a direct relationship with God that can begin to transform one from the inside.

I think though before we're zapped, so to speak, the last thing that would come to mind would be to pray to God at all, let alone asking God for help and a direct relationship.

There is the case of people who get born into church-going families though. They seem to be in a more uncertain state. I actually think it's easier when you come straight in from the wilderness.
