This is an anachronistic quote. False quote.
Do a search on Google Books. It's quoted enough in old books (not the internet) that it must be smoke/fire. I personally think the term Puritan goes back to the Cathars, which means pure ones (in the same mocking sense used against 16th century Puritans). John Owen considered the Cathars to be real, Reformation-era-like Christians in their day.
