With the current bad doctrine (FV/NPP/etc.) regeneration is the issue, not justification/sanctification
I said it in the beginning, and I continue to say it: all this bad doctrine being pushed within the Reformed camp (Federal Vision, New Perspective on Paul, Auburn Avenue, etc.) is being pushed by people who havn't yet been regenerated by the Word and the Spirit, and instead of reacting to that fact in a humble way, by going to the Word - humbly - they react in a prideful way, by dictating to God what regeneration is and how it occurs.
Regeneration is the tricky first step. You can't do it. Yet God states several times, in several ways, that if you move towards Him He will move towards you. The Word of God - the Holy Bible - is the wildcard in the process. (You had to encounter what I just wrote from the Bible itself.)
Regeneration is effected, when it is, by the Word and the Spirit, not by ritual or clerics or church buildings and other physical, carnal trappings. Humble yourself and take in the Word of God. The Word of God is the environment where regeneration will potentially happen. Not if you are filtering it constantly through vanity, worldly pride, and self-will though. You have to take it in humbly. With a contrite heart.
And you have to actually read the Word of God complete. No screwing around with just 'saying' or 'thinking' you've done it. Actually do it. Dedicated, complete efforts that form real arcs in time, day after day until complete. Genesis 1 through Revelation 22. Once, three times, seven times. It has to be a goal or you will just be desultory about it and never get around to actually doing it.
On the one hand one can feel sympathy for Christians - nominal or not - who struggle with this foundational subject and experience of being born again (regenerated); yet once they embark on their prideful missions to redefine biblical doctrine to suit their condition rather than comforming themselves to God's teaching one's sympathy rightfully goes out the window. Rebellion against God's teaching is the trait of those who want to be in hell (and who usually want to attempt to drag as many others as they can along with them). Once they've been confronted and given the truth (at least a few times) it is time to leave them to themselves...
